Has this been thought out carefully? I expect these fans would only make things worse. Why? Cooler water comes with baggage: nutrients. And a tiny amelioration of temperature can come with a larger relative change in nutrients, which is bad for corals.

@tyzissou @chrisecornwall Not for 2020 bleaching, but for earlier years yes, here is the paper. The key to this argument is the year 2004, when temperatures crossed bleaching thresholds, but no bleaching occurred - and the EAC was very slow / upwelling reduced that year.

... East Australian Current (EAC) was faster than normal in Jan-Feb. This drives upwelling of nutrient-rich water, which can make corals more susceptible to heat stress. Previous GBR bleaching events are associated with this same EAC pattern... [2/3]

A reviewer actually said this about our recent paper on the history of heat stress on the #GreatBarrierReef
@CoralReefWatch is fantastic, but please, don't blindly trust any SST product. Always validate with loggers and compare different products.
