Summary
Associate Professor in Zoology and Academic Board Member of the PhD Programme in Cultural & Environmental Heritages at the University of Bologna. Most relevant research projects in the fields of fishery genetics, systematics and evolution of marine fish: FAO Adriamed Project (2001-2003); EU-FP6 STREP FISH & CHIPS (2004-2006); the PRIN COFIN2005 (2006-2008) and 2008 (2010-2012); EU-FP6 IP SESAME(2007-2010); EU-FP7 FishPopTrace (2008-2011); EU Tender N. IPSC/2010/04/11/NC - AQUAGEN (2011-2012); ICCAT GBYP Phases 2-7 (2011-2018); MEDBLUESGEN EU JRC – IPSC (Contract 259844); the EMJD Programme in Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation (MARES; 2011-2018). As evolutionary animal biologist, my primary research interest is the understanding of pattern and process of evolution in animal kingdom. Until 1999: evolution, interspecific hybridization and evolution of reproductive modes in stick insects. Since 1999: micro- and macro-evolution of marine fish species in the Mediterranean and worldwide, addressing spatial and temporal population structure and changes of genetic diversity Bluefin tuna, soles, hake, great white sharks and global population of yellowfin tuna as well as on the reconstruction of speciation patterns and processes in skates and flatfishes. I’m leading author and co-author of 77 peer-reviewed papers and of several poster/oral communications. SHOWCASE PAPERS: Riccioni et al. 2010 PNAS USA, Nielsen et al. 2012 Nature Communications, Puncher et al. 2018 Mol Ecol Res.
