@danbrockington @NatureNeedsHalf This might interest you. It's a full analysis of the costs of conservation felt by local people & the magnitude & distribution of compensation. Stringent legal obligations for full compensation existed (world bank safeguards) but poorest still lost https://t.co/SSFTQA9cqF
@TomChivers e.g. here's our research on the welfare impacts of REDD+ projects on marginalised, very poor people, in Madagascar (just the kind of people climate policy is supposed to help) https://t.co/KiV0sbrZF3 (open access!) @TomChivers
When we were submitting this paper (https://t.co/gs1bU2uFP6 ) on the uncompensated local costs of protected areas, some reviewers were like "yawn, everybody knows this". Yet still the dominant narrative in conservation is that it's an obvious win-win for nature and ppl.
@jevgeniy_b True. The impacts of REDD on local communities where conservation costs aren't compensated despite clear commitments was an area not covered by the original article. You may have seen our work on this? https://t.co/SSFTQA9cqF
@jevgeniy_b Uggg I really hope not. One of our coauthors is @SarobidyRakoto - not sure if you know her work but it is very focused on ensuring conservation doesn't harm people https://t.co/zNfu2AQz5a I've also written on this extensively https://t.co/SSFTQA9cqF (1/2)
