But! A recent paper by Ferron et al. used data from extant fish and sharks to test hypotheses of tail fin shape in Dunkleosteus, and argue that the caudal fin would have been more shark- or tuna-like: https://t.co/RxyaDUoq5p https://t.co/LyM2PISfJ7
so interesting thing is mr. dunkleosteus is a little out of date. apparently in 2017 these guys were able to show that his caudal fin shape is closer to that of an active pelagic modern day shark
