Summary
Prof. Dr. Özhan ŞİMŞEK received his B.Sc. degree in Biology from Dicle University in 2006. In the same year, he began his M.Sc. studies at Çukurova University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, and completed his thesis on mutation detection in citrus in 2009. He subsequently continued in the same department for his Ph.D. studies.
During his doctoral training, Prof. Şimşek took part in several prestigious international research programs. He received advanced training in plant biotechnology and molecular breeding at Wageningen University (Netherlands); worked on marker development strategies and gene expression studies at the University of Catania (Italy); and contributed to citrus mutation detection projects at the Genomics Center of the Valencia Agricultural Research Institute (Spain).
He joined Çukurova University as a Research Assistant in 2010 and completed his Ph.D. in February 2016. In October 2019, he was appointed to Erciyes University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, where he received the title of Associate Professor. He was promoted to Full Professor in October 2025.
Prof. Şimşek’s research focuses on plant biotechnology, tissue culture, sustainable agricultural systems, climate-resilient crop development, and AI-driven smart agriculture approaches. His work particularly integrates multi-omics technologies, in vitro stress modeling, and machine learning for phenotyping and precision breeding, with a strong emphasis on enhancing agricultural sustainability under climate change conditions.
He has authored numerous research articles and conference papers in high-impact international and national journals and continues to contribute to the advancement of innovative, technology-driven agricultural solutions in Türkiye and globally.
