Mmoto Leonard Masubelele
Summary
Dr Mmoto Masubelele is passionate about the protection of biodiversity and the benefit-sharing of ecosystem services from protected areas to communities. He has completed a PhD in Botany with a focus on long-term environmental and landscape change in 2012. He has been employed by South African National Parks (SANParks) since 2013, to lead the science & monitoring to support the restoration efforts and evaluations of various land degradation frameworks and biodiversity monitoring programmes. Mmoto also has produced a few postgraduate (PhDs and Masters) students with whom he published on this topic and others (Green Militarization, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation) in various Universities in South Africa. He is a research fellow at the University of South Africa. He developed a keen interest in climate change and issues of sustainability in order for the protected areas to support the nationally determined contributions. He initiated and led the development of climate change adaptation and mitigation in national parks in South Africa. SANParks carbon footprint assessment and emissions reduction report that was completed in 2020.
Mmoto is in the process of finalizing the park management perceptions on climate change vulnerability report that is amongst the first to holistically look at the vulnerability of biodiversity, cultural heritage, tourism and infrastructure as well as neighbouring communities together.
