My works seeks to understand how the temporal dynamics of host-associated microbial communities influence host health and affect the strength of interactions between hosts and pathogens. I use amphibians as a model system for studying the vertebrate skin microbiome and how it protects against infection by the lethal pathogens Ranavirus and chytrid fungus.
I also study the structure and function of the gut microbiome in migratory birds.
