Shosuke Ito is a Professor Emeritus at Department of Chemistry, Fujita Health University School of Health Sciences, Toyoake, Aichi, Japan. He has been involved in chemistry of melanin and melanogenesis since middle 1970s. He has developed a microanalytical method to quantify the two types of melanin pigment, eumelanin and pheomelanin. The method is based on HPLC analyses of chemical degradation products from those pigment. Using this methodology, he has been studying chemical and biochemical regulation of melanogenesis, photogeratation of melanin pigments, relationship between phenotype and genotype in melanogenesis, and so on. He is also interested in biochemistry and clinical chemistry of melanin precursors, especially ortho-quinones. He has had many collaborations with basic and cell biologists as well as dermatologists in the above mentioned fields.
