Sandra Tanz is a Research Fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology at The University of Western Australia. During her ARC DECRA fellowship (2012-2015), she studied C4 photosynthesis and is interested in the cell type specific expression pattern of genes in C4 plants. She is particularly interested in the expression and the regulation of chloroplast genes in the different cell types. She hopes that her research will give insight into the mechanism of why C4 plants are much more efficient in hot and dry environments compared to C3 plants. Ultimately, this knowledge could be used to improve the yield of C3 crop plants, such as rice and wheat, allowing them to grow more efficiently in such areas.
