Recipient of the inaugural 3Rs award from the UK National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) in 2005 and the New Zealand National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee (NAEAC) 3Rs award in 2011. Awarded the New Zealand Association of Scientists Science Communicator Prize in 2012 and NZ Prime Minister's Science Media Communication Prize and Royal Society of New Zealand Callaghan Medal in 2013.
