Her research interests broadly cover the field of marine and freshwater animals with special focus on sponges. She has written extensively on faunistics, biogeography, taxonomy, systematics, and sustainable use of sponges as key bioresources. She is reviewer for several Scientific Journals and co-editor of World Porifera Database (WPD) and World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). Her publications include books chapters and monographs e.g. Systema Porifera (Kluwer-Academic: 2002), Atlas of African Freshwater Sponges (Tervuren Africa Museum: 2009), and Fauna d’Italia (Calderini: 2011). She is currently working on shallow water spongeculture as biofilter and source of bioproducts, and she is involved in projects of global biodiversity assessment and management.
