Ralf is the research leader for data science at Scion. His research interests include scientific computing toolsets, interactive data exploration, distributed computing and reproducible research. He enjoys applying data science techniques to environmental issues.
Ralf received his PhD in physics from University College London and did his post-doctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, working in the field of experimental atomic physics. Before joining Scion he spent 7 years in industry R&D, working on Magnetic Resonance Imaging devices at Philips Research, and leading the design of data analytics and control software for advanced lithography machines at ASML in the Netherlands.
Ralf is a core developer of NumPy and SciPy, two libraries at the heart of the Python scientific computing ecosystem. He is a director of NumFOCUS, a nonprofit with a mission to promote sustainable high-level programming languages, open code development, and reproducible scientific research.
