Robert J Van Exan


Robert’s graduate research at the University of Guelph in the Department of Biomedical Sciences (OVC) 1974 to 1979 focussed on cell interactions cellular differentiation. His research continued at Dalhousie University with a Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship 1979 to 1981. Dr. Van Exan joined Sanofi Pasteur (formerly Connaught Laboratories Ltd.) in 1981 as Cell Biologist and manager of cell culture production, Viral Vaccine Division. Robert moved to commercial operations and held positions in marketing and sales for a period of 15 years ending as Director of Sales for Canada in 2001. He was appointed Director of Immunization Policy 2002 to 2016 and was responsible for corporate policy and collaboration with Federal, Provincial and NGO immunization stakeholder groups including PHAC and NACI. He was also responsible for corporate policy initiatives in support of the National Immunization Strategy and has provided immunization policy input to a number of Federal Commissions, Committees, Roundtables and workshops related to immunization policy and biosecurity. Robert was a founding member of the Vaccine Industry Committee of BIOTECanada and served as the inaugural chair - 2003 through 2005 and vice chair 2006 to 2009 and 2015. He was one of the principal editors of the Vaccine Industry Committee white paper series “Building on the Legacy of Vaccines in Canada”. Robert retired from Sanofi Pasteur in 2016 to establish his own policy and knowledge translation business.
