Dr. Islam has a distinguished academic background. He obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and did his Masters in Civil Engineering and PhD at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kitami Institute of Technology under the Japanese Government Monbusho Scholarship in Remote Sensing and GIS on Environmental Hazard.
His activities are focused on remote sensing and GIS techniques for oceanography, marine hydrodynamics, water quality modeling, environmental hazards such as flood hazard assessment, etc. Dr Islam has also focused on the study of ocean color monitoring, sea surface temperature and Lake Water quality monitoring by using satellite remote sensing data and the integration of remote sensing data with mathematical modeling. Dr Islam has published more than 50 papers in peer reviewed journals and conferences proceedings and he is the author of several technical reports. He also developed multi hazard maps, arsenic risk maps, flood hazard maps, land development maps and risk assessment techniques for flood hazards for Bangladesh as well as water quality monitoring for case II water by using remote sensing and GIS. He is the Editor in Chief of IUBAT Reviews and a peer reviewer for many international journals.
