I majored in chemistry, at UCLA, receiving a B.S. in 1960. I knew that I needed a good background in chemistry as a foundation for learning biology. After graduation, I entered the UCSF School of Medicine, graduating in 1965. i remained at UCSF for post-graduate studies. My research, in collaboration with others, has focused on acid-base and electrolyte physiology and pathophysiology, emphasizing an integrated approach encompassing endocrine, nutrition, skeletal, and cardiovascular physiology.
